Paper handmade by the artist (kozo, recycled cotton textiles), sumi, stone
In “Caves and Ravines,” I hoped to evoke the “in-between” — a sense of longing and belonging, of rooted place but also uprooting. There are elements here of deep time, caveways and earth, as well as a drama inherit in land, water, and ourselves.
The large artwork is a repurposing of the installation omote, made in Echizen. The other works were made at my home studio in Iowa. To mount these artworks, I worked with an art mounter, conservator, and framer located in Fukui City named Sasaki Shigeo.
Many thanks to Minato Shichio, Professor of Art at Fukui University, for the invitation to show my work with the non-profit arts organization E&C Art Base. Thank you as well to the Bank of Fukui Headquarters staff for their love of the arts and continued support.
An accompanying trifold was made for this exhibition featuring a poem told in both Japanese and English that floats across the interior atop a pulp-painted sheet of handmade paper.
Note: Some detail images at the end of this are of other works in the series that were not on display.
